Is technology really necessary?

Is technology really necessary? I understand many people use it for personal reasons such as calling someone or communicating with someone who you can't physically see. That was what technology was used for a while back, but now it's a different story. Almost anywhere you go, technology is overrun. Anyone you see is clouded up by social media. Having social media is fun and all to see what people are up to or whatever it may be, but it's come to a point where everywhere you go people are on their iPhones not even caring about anything else. This generation is filled with people who mostly only care about social media. When social media isn't there, people can get very mad. I am also a victim of social media and technology. It's come to a point where social media is our everything. Before any of this, life was different. The day there is no social media, people are going to get a wake up call back into reality.

Technology is very useful, but I agree that it is starting to be overused. I have many times been eating at a restaurant sitting next to a couple who rather than talking to each other, have their heads down texting. I have even caught myself doing the same thing. Social media is a great way to connect with friends, but it too is starting to be used in the wrong way. People are starting to worry too much about who they're following and how many followers they have, rather than enjoying the site. I often find myself taking several pictures for me to post on my account later rather than enjoying the moment I'm in. There are many advances occurring in our world but we must remember that everything is good in moderation.

                                                                             

If there were no social media to encourage them, would all of those narcissists disappear? It is inherently part of human nature to focus on oneself to the exclusion of all else, to create one's own personal world filled with their own accomplishments. Social media is just that- a medium in which people can express themselves. Without it, they would still remain just as self-absorbed. Those people who will "disappear" into social media would probably do just the same without it, refusing to talk seriously with anyone else and simply bragging to anyone who will listen, and some who won't as well.

I agree with some parts of what you are saying, but also disagree on a lot of what you said. I agree that social media is overused and used at inappropriate times, such as during family dinner or while on a date with someone. However, contrary to what you talked about, technology extends so much further than just social media. Technology has so many useful purposes. It is used in medicine, science, teaching, and so much more. In fact, if technology didn't exist we wouldn't be able to participate in this discussion right now!
